EU approves SKG-Westrock merger

The European Commission has approved the merger between Smurfit Kappa Group plc of Ireland and Westrock Company of the US.
The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the companies' limited combined market position resulting from the proposed transaction. The notified transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
Dublin-based Smurfit Kappa Group and US packaging company Westrock announced plans to create Smurfit Westrock, a global packaging giant, with “unparalleled scale, quality and geographic diversity” in September 2023.
The new packaging giant Smurfit Westrock would have its focus on activities in the Americas.
